TNA IMPACT
14/11/13

Thanks for checking out The Real Mid Card, and we hope you enjoy this look at the latest episode of TNA Impact Wrestling.

Tonight’s show starts by recapping last weeks underwhelming Full Metal Mayhem match between Jeff Hardy and Chris Sabin, and showing us Sabin’s brutal welts on his legs. They also hype up Kurt Angle vs Austin Aries in a submission match in the World Title Tournament.

Aces & 8’s head to the ring, which feels pretty meaningless now Bully Ray isn’t World Champion, they don’t have anything going for them anymore. Best part of this segment was Bully calling Mikey Tenay an ‘oooold bahstard’ and doing a huge fake laugh. Bully speaks about fooling Mr. Anderson last week with their fake Aces breakup, until he is interrupted by Anderson himself. The two men plan out their match next week, if Bully loses, Aces disband, if Anderson loses, he retires. Anderson used the imminent birth of twin children as his reason to quit, saying he can go be a proper dad. Bully retorted with ‘I’d love to pile-drive your pregnant wife’ which is so ridiculous I burst out laughing. Anderson attacked upon hearing that, eventually getting the upper hand, chasing them off and challenging one of the members to a match.

MR. ANDERSON VS KNUX

This was a decent pretty quick match, with Anderson fighting in his street clothes. Always annoys me in WWE when people come to the ring in their gear but don’t expect to fight…you’re in your underpants mate. Anderson won with a Mic Check, then announced his own victory. He sold the beating by sounding like his batteries were running out.

Backstage – Joseph Park challenges Christopher Daniels to a match, and Daniels agrees in his own segment. They mention Abyss being the TV Champ, which I thought TNA were ignoring as it hasn’t been mentioned since it last changed hands.

JOSEPH PARK VS CHRISTOPHER DANIELS

Park uses his size advantage at first, but Daniels experience takes over. Daniels eventually won with a low blow, in a surprisingly long match. Storyline is completely stagnant by this point.

ETHAN CARTER III VS NORM FERVUM & DEWEY BARNES

I initially laughed when the two jobbers came out, but after a few minutes I realised the two of them have had more TV time than the likes of Sonjay Dutt, Petey Williams, etc. I understand they’re building EC3, but the matches aren’t even quick/dominating. Taz spent most of this match laughing, insulting the jobbers and wondering what’s on their attire. EC3 wins after hitting the Headlock Driver (that’s its name apparently) on both men and pinning both.

AJ Styles mates get him a video package again, showing his TNA title defence in AAA Mexico. Good package actually, I’m impressed that TNA have taken it so far, it’ll make AJ’s return a huge deal. This is followed by Dixie Carter kicking off backstage about it, completely logical, I’m impressed.

Backstage – Jeff Hardy shows the cameraman his facial injuries from a chair assisted dropkick to the face last week. He talks about doing it for the fans, which I thought was cool, because he definitely takes a lot of risks.

Dixie heads to the ring and runs down AJ to loud boos. She goes on to say Spike TV will be showing Turning Point live and for free, which the fans still boo. She then invites Bobby Roode, James Storm, Samoa Joe and Magnus to the ring, as they will be fighting on said event. Storm-Roode will be a bull-rope match, Joe-Magnus a falls count anywhere. Storm screamed about beer, Joe called out Dixie for not handling AJ correctly, and Magnus looked directly at the camera and said he’ll win. He never actually looks at his opponent, kind of lacks emotion.

Backstage – Anderson beats up poor old Garett and handcuffs him to a metal frame thing.

GAIL KIM VS HANNAH BLOSSOM

I should have really seen this coming, she’s been in OVW since competing in TNA’s show British Boot Camp. She got signed along with her twin sister, and now would be the perfect time to bring them onto the main roster. Hannah basically gets jobbed out, but does her part perfectly well. Gail looked absolutely ruthless, and honestly more dominating than EC3.

Joseph Park comes to the ring, and challenges…his brother, Abyss. Well that’s not happening!

Backstage – Mr. Anderson uncuffs Garett and carries him away, bit sinister.

SUBMISSION MATCH – AUSTIN ARIES VS KURT ANGLE

This match started with your standard technical moves, Angle attempting his Greco-Roman stuff, whereas Aries sticks to strikes. Logically either man attacks the area that their respective submission targets. Continuing the theme of his last two matches, Kurt couldn’t quite get to grips with Aries, especially when Roode came out to watch from the stage. After being held in the Ankle Lock a few times, Aries attempted a 450 Splash from the top. After his beautiful selling of the leg made him miss, Kurt jumped on him and got a Crossface victory to send a message to Roode.

As Kurt celebrates, we see Mr. Anderson drag out Garett, and pile-drive him, Terry Funk style on the stage. We see Roode and Angle just looking confused, surely they should either look happy since they’ve both dealt with Aces? Pretty good show tonight, with Anderson and Bully’s storyline running nicely through the whole thing

TNA: No Surrender 2013 – Who won the BFG series?

TNA: NO SURRENDER
12/09/13

Impact starts with the top four of the Bound For Glory Series entering the arena. Everyone but AJ has luggage, I’m guessing he’s wearing his gear under his jeans. This was followed by a great promo package showing each man’s journey the top of the BFG table. WWE is untouchable when it comes to promos but this was the closest TNA have come to their level.

Bully Ray and his new Mrs. Brooke Tessmacher make their way to the ring, with Bully turning Brooke around to the camera can see her behind, and shouting ‘that belongs to me! it belongs to the president!’. Brilliantly arrogant and making full use of Brooke’s appearance.

He gets on the mic and says he is not happy, and mentions Hulk Hogan. Hulk makes his way out and gets a massive reaction. Bully says Anderson will do the right thing in their match later tonight, and he comes out (to the Aces & 8’s music) and doesn’t accept Hulks handshake. Bully wants an apology, Anderson decks him and shouts he’ll be the next World Heavyweight Champion, his face went bright red, cool visual.

BFG SEMI FINAL – AUSTIN ARIES VS AJ STYLES

This is a repeat match from not so long ago, which was excellent up to the ending, which left a lot of people disappointed. Hopefully they’ll fix that tonight. Really equal moves, each man attempting similar moves, some successfully, some reversed. The timing is a little off, AA is either too fast or AJ can’t keep up. This was obvious when AA went for a suicide dive, AJ quickly climbed to the apron and hit a springboard forearm, but AA had to slow to a halt mid run so AJ could hit him. Great spot with AA missing his corner dropkick, ending up laid across the top rope, AJ with a Pele kick, and a Styles Clash from the SECOND ROPE. Definitely made up for last time.

Backstage Segment – Sting hypes up Magnus, who fires back saying he’s sick of people saying he’s the future, because ‘the future is now’.

BFG SEMI FINAL – BOBBY ROODE VS MAGNUS

Roode jumped Magnus at the bell and wears him down for the first few minutes of the match, your standard Pro v Up-and-comer match. Magnus tries to fight back but ultimately gets shut down. The crowd are really behind Magnus, as he held Roode in a Texas Cloverleaf, hinting at a submission win. After Roode attempted a Fisherman’s Suplex, Magnus rolled him up for the 3 count. Kind of a weak ending when he’s supposed to be a contender for the World Title.

roodemagnusThe tenacious Bobby Roode – Source: Impact Wrestling

Backstage Segment – Roode is kicking off backstage, Daniels and Kazarian try calm him down, but then all decide to ‘screw Hulks plans’ for tonight.

Backstage Segment – Hulk is talking to Manik, and compares his mask to Hulking up…okay mate. Manik says he wants a challenge, and wants to fight Jeff Hardy. Hulk makes the match as they are interrupted by Dixie Carter. She says the Bellator lawyers have asked TNA to take Tito Ortiz and Rampage off the show, presumably so they can do some proper training for their real life fight.

Backstage Segment – Bully is talking to the THREE remaining members of Aces, saying he still loves them and he hopes they have his back. I did not realise they were down to so few already.

LAST MAN STANDING MATCH – BULLY RAY (C) VS MR. ANDERSON (WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPIONSHIP)

The two men brawl in the ring and to the outside, with Bully using Christy Hemme as a human shield, Hemme just looked awkward. Weirdly Anderson is still wearing the Aces vest and jeans, I think it’s pretty obvious that they’re not mates anymore. Anderson tells himself to get the tables, which I thought was brilliant, I really like the vocal side of Anderson, it suits him more than just being in the background. Bully gets the upper hand by using a chair, and backs Earl Hebner into a corner. Earl does the ‘not taking any more shit’ gimmick he’s done about a thousand times (it was good in 2001) but gets decked by Bully anyway. Anderson nails a Mic Check onto a chair but there’s no ref. After enough time to recover, Bully hits a cutter which was supposed to be onto a chair, but he landed on the whole thing. Aces come out and don’t do anything, giving Brooke enough time to sneak in and low blow Anderson. The Aces then hit a triple powerbomb on Anderson (copyright The Shield), but Anderson makes it up at 9. Bully hits him with a chain covered hand but he makes it up at 9 again. He then takes an absolutely massive spear through the table he gets in, and stays down for ten.

bullytableBully looks mashed! – Source: Impact Wrestling

I saw a spoiler earlier this week that said if Anderson hadn’t signed his new contract, this would’ve been his send off match. This explained why EMT’s came to take Anderson away, put him on a stretcher and took him up the ramp. Bully tipped him out of it, and piledriven him on the stage. Really cool segment, especially ripping off the neck brace, made me cringe.

Backstage Segment – ODB quickly tells us she hasn’t been Knockout Champion for three years, but that is going to change soon.

Gunner and James Storm are in the ring as we come back from commercial. I let out an audible groan when saw them, I was really tempted to fast forward through it. He shouts about being drunk, beer, drinking beer and other people drinking beer before saying they don’t have any competition. Chavo and Hernandez come to the ring and challenge them, after Chavo sarcastically kissing their arses for a while. I realised Hernandez and Gunner were topless as their partners were fully dressed, and stopped actually listening to what they were saying.

BOUND FOR GLORY SERIES FINAL – MAGNUS VS AJ STYLES

Both men get great reactions from the crowd, and start the match with simple holds and whips. Back and forth action, which was really fair as both men are faces. Before the match could gain momentum, Roode, Daniels and Kazarian run to the ring and assault both men, with Daniels attacking AJ that little bit more, makes sense. Weirdly, the three of them then turn around and head back up the ramp. As we come back from commercial AJ and Magnus are back to fighting like they were before…what was the point then? Magnus steals Antonio Cesaro’s European Uppercut to hit a mid air AJ, before going for his Cloverleaf. AJ reversed that by using Undertakers Hells Gate/Gogoplatta, move theft is rampant tonight. After the two men fight on the second rope, AJ knocks Magnus off with super quick elbows and forearms and hits a Spiral Tap (YouTube it) and wins the match and the BFG Series.

ajwinsWinner of the series – Source: Impact Wrestling

The cameras show Magnus looking absolutely gutted as AJ celebrates. I think Magnus needed the win more than AJ did, but hopefully they’ll put him over as he came close as he could. AJ gets on the mic and says he has some mistakes to bring up, and will tell Dixie next week on Impact. I think this is going to be a rehash of when CM Punk was holding the WWE hostage as his contract ran out…interesting.

As always you can contact me with any thoughts, or even if you just want to chat about wrestling at @jrholberry on twitter.

TNA HARDCORE JUSTICE
15/08/2013

Bizarrely, this show is called Hardcore Justice, even though there have been at least two shows with the same name before, and the last one was numbered…TNA eh?

4 WAY LADDER MATCH – AUSTIN ARIES VS JEFF HARDY VS AJ STYLES VS KAZARIAN

Look at that line-up. Just look at it. I’ve said in the past that I’m not a huge fan of Hardy, but he’s in his element in this match. As this match is in the Bound For Glory Series, the winner will get 20 points. People still don’t know what to think of AJ, he’s supposed to be a heel but the crowds ignore it and cheer him anyway. Certain points of the match were pretty confusing, all four competitors throwing each other out of the ring so they could fight one-on-one (watch any three way match to see what I mean) but then the dudes on the outside would fight and you wouldn’t know where to look. This came into play when all the men were atop 2 ladders reaching for the piece of paper with 20 points printed on it (I know, I know), AA hit a sunset flip from the top on Hardy, but Kaz and AJ were still fighting. Two of them should have been knocked off first to give that spot the attention it deserved. The end came when Christopher Daniels and Bobby Roode came to the ring to help Kazarian, Roode distracting Hardy whilst Daniels handed Kaz an appletini, which was then thrown in Hardy’s face. I say thrown in Hardy’s face, it completely missed, you could see it go straight up and drop and both men paused and didn’t know what to do. In the end Kazarian just smacked Hardy and grabbed the prize. Good match, shitty but can’t be helped ending.

Main Event Mafia, minus Kurt Angle are in the ring with Dixie Carter. Dixie explains that Kurt got a DUI last week and has since entered rehab. I liked the way TNA handled this, completely honestly. Aces & Eights come to the ring and start dissing MEM and saying they’re going to end their careers like they did Kurt’s. This week Rampage is wearing a camouflage suit, finally playing along. After Magnus fires back, actually getting live mic time for once, Aces realise they outnumber MEM and attack them, and weirdly get the upper hand. I haven’t seen that for a long time, it’s about time they stopped looking like jobbers.

THREE WAY HARDCORE MATCH – MICKIE JAMES (C) VS ODB VS GAIL KIM

I read this week that after getting a pretty good push, Taryn Terrell hasn’t been on TV recently because she’s pregnant. Fortunately, this means they can use ODB to her full potential for once. She comes out last and receives chants straight away. Mickie James went for a chair within about a minute of the match starting, and teams up with Gail to take out ODB. Even though the title of this match should give it away, I had no idea this was a hardcore match, I suppose TNA have realised how popular the knockout matches have been recently and capitalised on it. After ODB used her bra to throw her opponents around the ring, she hit her TKO finisher onto a chair and got a three count on Gail. Not a title match though, don’t know why not.

Backstage Segment – MEM discuss what happened to them earlier, and saying they need to replace Kurt asap, and decide Sting decides to ask Austin Aries. The show goes to commercial, and then we are joining Sting asking away. AA considers it, but we don’t get an answer.

Backstage Segment – The cameraman who wanders around backstage bothering people every week asks Bobby Roode if his plan is working so far. He says if he wins his table match later on, he gets 20 points and will be in second place already.

Backstage Segment – Sting returns to the MEM and tells them AA said no. Rampage says he needs to go to the ring and call someone out. Rampage really impressed me in this segment, pretty much being the character he’s been playing in UFC/MMA for the last ten years.

Backstage Segment – Bully Ray is on the phone, chatting away, but ends with ‘I love you too, Brooke’.

rampageortizRampage begging for Tito – Source: Impact Wrestling

Rampage comes to the ring with Samoa Joe, and grabs the mic. He starts his promo with ‘what’s up y’all, what’s up’ which I really liked, doesn’t sound forced. He tells the crowd that he loves being in TNA, and he needs to ask one of his old partners for a favour. He calls out Tito Ortiz, who stalls on his answer before Bully Ray comes to the ring and disses all three of them. He nicely gets the Bellator date in smoothly, nice publicity for them/Spike TV. He fires them up, and then quickly heads to the back.

BFG SERIES TABLES MATCH – SAMOA JOE VS MR. ANDERSON VS MAGNUS VS BOBBY ROODE

I’m interested to see how they avoid Joe and Magnus facing off, because if they team up, that’s heel behaviour isn’t it? At one point both men went for a powerbomb on either man, facing the same table…I don’t think you can share the win lads. Some fun hardcore action in this match, which the crowd definitely loved. I always feel they should break more tables in these matches, throw themselves through them, break them behind the referees back etc. After some dangerous looking dives by Joe, Kazarian and Daniels run to the ring and repeat the appletini trick (successfully this time) on Magnus, who subsequently gets powerbombed through a table by their mate Roode.

ariesstylesStyles takes a leap of faith – Source: Impact Wrestling

Backstage Segment – Sting wonders what Tito will do, and doesn’t know if he trusts him.

Backstage Segment – Anderson is hyping Bully up for his match, but end up arguing.

WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE STEEL CAGE MATCH – CHRIS SABIN (C) VS BULLY RAY

The two men face off as the match begins, and surprisingly, a loud ‘Bully Ray’ chant breaks out. An added stimulation to this match is that if Bully loses, he cannot challenge for the title ever again. There was a cool spot where Bully held up Sabin in a gorilla press, and threw him into the cage several times, really showing the size advantage. As the match goes on, they’re really driving at Sabin being the underdog, as he fights back every so often, but gets destroyed again and again. After fighting back and hitting a great tornado DDT, Sabin impressively got Bully up for a massive Death Valley Driver and went on to whip bully with his leather vest. Bully fired back with a big boot that looked like it killed Sabin, and both men climbed to the top rope. Bully attempted a powerbomb, but Sabin held on, presumably to then sit up and do a hurricanrana, but we will never know, as the men botched it horribly and Bully nearly landed on his head. Bully, the pro that he is, started wildly selling his shoulder. As Sabin tried to make his way out of the cage door, Mr. Anderson ran out and slammed it over his head and shouted ‘YOU SHALL NOT PASS!’ give this man a push, solely for that. Rampage and Ortiz run out, and throw Anderson to the side. However, Ortiz pulls out a hammer and hits Rampage across the back of the head. Bully takes advantage of the distraction and hits a stiff powerbomb for the three count, and the championship.

Notes: Genuinely a card of solid matches, not one let the side down. A few mistakes here and there, but I understand how easy that must be. Not sure if I’m happy for Sabin to drop the title, as he never looked strong enough to hold it in the first place. Also, NO HOGAN! Third week in a row he hasn’t been on the show, and over the weekend I wrote this, I learnt that Brooke Hogan had been released…to save money apparently.

Thanks for checking out the weekly review of TNA Impact here on The Real Mid Card. We hope you enjoy reading. Hit ‘Follow’ for weekly articles about TNA and much more from the world of professional wrestling.

TNA IMPACT
01/08/2013

Impact begins with the best tag team in wrestling, Bad Influence (Christopher Daniels and Kazarian) discussing the imminent arrival of a mystery man who claimed he would appear on the 1st of august. TNA built this for one week, so it’s safe to say people aren’t exactly foaming at the mouth.

Next was some footage of two security guards wearing turtle-neck jumpers refusing to let Taz into the building. After some protesting, he says he’s going to call his boys. I’m sure Taz used to be a super tough ‘suplex machine’ but he can’t get past two middle aged men? He didn’t even try!

Tonight’s Bound For Glory Series matches have been decided by the fans votes, which includes Austin Aries v AJ Styles. Hearing that instantly put a smile on my face, dream match for a lot of people.

The August 1st video was then shown, which showed the silhouette of a man who looked to have a bald head and pointy ears, leading a lot of people on twitter to say it was Bob ‘Hardcore’ Holly. At this point I knew who it was, but no spoilers so you can find out later.

Austin Aries comes to the ring to a very positive reaction, it’s probably time to let him run as a cool heel. He shows respect for Chris Sabin and his World Title win, but says he is coming for the belt. He puts over his match with AJ, until he is interrupted by Bobby Roode. BR has been on a losing streak recently, and he takes his frustrations out on AA, saying that no one can do what he does in the ring. AA fires back by mocking his nickname, saying he should be called ‘The Spit Factor’ which seemed improvised, which you never see in WWE anymore. AA says he hopes BR gets back on track, gets to the final 4 of the BFG series, so he can beat him one more time.

BFG SERIES – BOBBY ROODE VS HERNANDEZ

‘Mexican Sheamus’ Hernandez makes his way to the ring, and gets jumped by Roode. The two men brawl around the outside, with Roode getting the upper hand using his cunning. I think TNA should have really played on Hernandez being from Texas (that’s where we are tonight) but it doesn’t surprise me. Hernandez was dominating until Roode distracted the ref and hit a low blow. Weirdly Hernandez kicked out of it, it’s a match ender! Roode rolled to the outside, and threw 3 chairs into the ring. As the ref threw them out, Roode smashed a bottle over ‘supermexs’ for the 3 count and 7 points. As I watched this I shouted ‘THERE’S GLASS ALL OVER THE RING WHY IS HE COUNTING!?’ but Roode started miming that it’d been thrown into the ring by the crowd, GENIUS.

Backstage Segment – The Main Event Mafia are shown walking through the halls, saying they have an offer for the Aces & 8’s.

Backstage Segment – ODB is telling Eric Young she has to prepare for her match, and Eric says he needs to talk to Joseph Park. EY says he has studied Parks tapes, and even set off a rocket to discover that when Park bleeds, he snaps.

Backstage Segment – Manik (who has his back to the camera even though we saw his face a few weeks back) is speaking to Sabin, and basically says he’s the new face of the X Division.

BFG SERIES MATCH – JAY BRADLEY VS JOSEPH PARK

Eric has brought Park some headgear so he won’t bleed anymore, but it made me wonder why he’s allowed to wear it? Why wouldn’t every wrestler wear protective clothing? Bradley beats Park down for 99% of the match, until Park hits a Samoan Drop out of nowhere for the win. Mike Tenay calls the move a ‘Fall-away Slam’…groan. On a positive note, EY got the crowd completely behind Park, really loud chants.

Backstage Segment – MEM are talking about their next goal in TNA, with Sting shouting way too much, and Rampage actually getting a line in, that he delivers pretty well.

MANIK VS CHRIS SABIN

Right, let’s have a champ v champ match in the middle of the card, that’s a good idea. I cannot stand the Manik character, it doesn’t make sense anymore. Now we know who he is and his back story, it doesn’t mesh, he just seems like a proper weirdo. That being said, the two men fire through chain wrestling moves incredibly fast, with thankfully Sabin getting the upper hand, he really needs to look strong. Sabin wins the match with a running RKO, a superkick and his weird fisherman driver move. A clean win, but I don’t know if it was a good time for Sabin to give up so much offence.

As Sabin Celebrates, Bully Ray appears in the ring and beats down Sabin. He mouthed off until Manik hit him from behind, distracting him enough for Sabin to recover, fight back and run him off.

Backstage Segment – Taz is outside moaning, so he decides to open a limo that arrived earlier. There’s a laptop just sat on the seat…waste of a segment.

Backstage Segment – Bad Influence are scheduled to fight next week, and tease splitting up…that better not happen, I’ll stop watching forever!

GAIL KIM VS ODB

This match has a lot of potential, which made me think about how small TNA’s knockout division is now, but how good each lady is (excl. Velvet Sky). Really smart booking in this match, ODB using power v Gail’s speed. After about 8 minutes, I realised this has been longer than most WWE Divas matches. The women brawl around the outside and are both counted out, but carry on fighting until being pulled apart.

Backstage Segment – Born again teenage mosher AJ styles is being angsty, saying he doesn’t care if his match is a dream or not, ooooo!

Backstage Segment – Bully Ray is telling his troops to take care of the MEM, because he wants to concentrate on his rematch with Sabin next week. Brooke Hogan walks into the room and say he needs to be nice to her, because she can effect his rematch.

BFG SERIES MATCH – AJ STYLES VS AUSTIN ARIES

Again, this should be higher up the card. Two former World Champions in a match that they admitted was a dream match. The Match starts furiously fast, both men trying their well known moves but neither being successful. Both men hit really high moves over the top to the other, in what appears to be an effort to steal the show. AA attempted a superplex, but kept his feet on the ropes as AJ went over, landed on his feet and pulled him off into a neckbreaker, genuinely innovative stuff. AJ then unsuccessfully went for a 450 splash, that the crowd went mad for. AA tried the last chancery submission, got a two count for his brainbuster, and landed on AJ’s knees whilst trying a 450 of his own..getting more frustrated each time. AJ attempted a Styles Clash on the ramp, but was backdropped to the floor by AA. Aries then tried a suicide dive and was thrown onto the ring steps, dangerous stuff. Both men eventually recovered and exchanged strikes. AJ hit a pele kick and both men fell down, draping an arm over each other. Brian Hebner started the 3 count, and on 2 AA got his arm up, winning the match…what the fuck? Awesome match, marred by a weak, weak ending.

Main Event Mafia come to the ring, and Sting repeats the same old shit he’s been saying since their conception. Aces & 8’s make their way out, and Kurt challenges them to a 5 on 5 match at Hardcore Justice, with whoever gets pinned losing their job (goodbye Aces & 8’s). After they brawl for a bit, some generic music hits and the mystery man makes his entrance…it’s uninteresting MMA fighter TITO ORTIZ!

All the wrestlers look scared, apart from Rampage who has a fight against him later this year.

And that’s it!

Notes: Majority of the action was good, apart from the two very weak finishes and a new world champ looking in danger. It seems like the main storyline is on its way out, and there was no Hulk Hogan tonight! Can’t remember the last time that happened.

The following is a review of the latest episode of TNA Impact. It was written by TNA Correspondent Joseph Holberry (check out the bio here) Enjoy reading. Follow, comment and like! Also check out the wrestling talk series Unsanctioned Wrestling on YouTube.

3sBobby Roode and Jeff Hardy at Final Resolution 2012 – Source: TNA Wrestling

Hopefully people enjoyed my review of Impact last week, as now its going to be a weekly thing! As always you can contact me with any thoughts, or even if you just want to chat about wrestling at @jrholberry on twitter.

Impact begins with footage of sting walking into the arena looking very dapper in a suit, hinting at his main event mafia idea from last week.

Promo package for the Bound For Glory Series, which recapped who qualified over the last few weeks. They also had a soundbite from each of them, I liked that, especially as a lot of them never get any mic time.

Cut to 10 of the BFG qualifiers in the ring, all staring at Mr Anderson who is on the outside. Hulk Hogan comes out and puts over the series and its prestige, then invites the first BFG series winner Bobby Roode, to the ring. He fails to mention that even though Bobby won the series, he lost his title match to Kurt Angle because the ‘creative team’ didn’t think he was ready…terrible decision, he was definitely ready and if not, why not let him run for a month and lose it at the next ppv? Anyway, Hulk asks Jeff Hardy to the ring, who comes out to a loud ovation. Hardy continues to be massively over with the crowd wherever he goes, I’m not a huge fan, but I appreciate the risks he takes/has taken for the fans. Hulk then tells us its open fight night, and we’re going to see the results of last weeks vote which was to see who gets the first call out of the night, with the winner being Hardy. Before he can make his pick, Austin Aries gets on the mic and tells Jeff ‘even though you’re the most popular man in the company, there’s always chants of AUSTIN ARIES’ which a small section of the crowd to join in. Christopher Daniels snatches the mic and tells Hardy that he DOESN’T want to take on ‘The Secretary of Offence Francois Kazarian, or the sexually delicious Christopher Daniels’. If TNA don’t give Daniels a world title run before he retires, (which may be sooner than later, he’s 43) they really don’t know what talent they’re wasting. Hardy does the obvious thing and calls out Roode, and follows that by saying a couple of vague things followed by ‘CREA-TUUURES’ before being shoved by Roode and accidentally falling backwards into Samoa Joe. This then sets off a chain reaction of everyone in the ring fighting, which the crowd go mad for. The faces get the upper hand and start clearing the ring, apart from AJ Styles who starts attacking Hardy which looked very out of place, as everyone else had finished what they were doing. Even the commentators didn’t mention it, very odd.

After the break, they recap the earlier brawl, and Mr Anderson makes his way to the ring (even though he was already out here?). He lets us know the rules of open fight night, and calls out ‘Mr Joseph Park…Paaark’ which I must admit, was brilliant.

MR ANDERSON v JOSEPH PARK

Mike Tenay puts over the fact Park qualified for the BFG series by defeating Crimson last week, which if you read my last review you’ll know, made me pretty annoyed. Match starts with some basic chain wrestling to show Parks ineptitute. After mocking Park with a few hammer and headlocks, Park realises what to do next, takes Anderson down and repeatedly slaps him on the back of the head. Anderson stands up, bluffs respect for his opponent before targeting Parks knee with a sloppy looking dropkick. Anderson with a chinlock, and then takes Park down as he tries to fight to his feet. Anderson goes for a swanton bomb and misses. Park to his feet, whips anderson and hits a back body drop. Park with a boston crab until DOC makes his way to the ring and distracts the ref, Anderson tries a schoolboy pin but only gets two. Park recovers and nails a couple of hard scoop slams and heads to the second rope. DOC kicks his knee out, Anderson recovers and grabs Park for the Mic Check and the win. Afterwards it shows Anderson smiling at DOC, to tell us that the conflict from last week is solved.

Backstage Segment – Aces & 8’s are stood backstage, listening to Anderson bragging about his match. DOC then interupts and tells him that he nearly lost until he got involved, and says he wants to be the VP of the group. Bully Ray says that will be put to a vote, and to put that to the side for tonight, as he has a problem he wants to solve, involving his wife – Brooke Hogan.

Cut to the ring – Jay Bradley is on the mic, saying he wants the guy who was champion during last years series, Austin Aries. He then says ‘come out here and get bo-sticked’? I honestly have no idea what that means, but sounds like a sexual innuedo to me. Aries walks through the stage shaking his head, probably wondering what bo-sticking is. NOTE: I later learnt that Bradleys finisher is a lariat called the ‘Boomstick’, he just said it very strangely in his promo.

AUSTIN ARIES v JAY BRADLEY

Bradley tries to rush Aries, who steps to the side and throws Bradley out. He follows that with his double axe handle from the top rope. bradley back into the ring face down, aries comes back in with a nice senton over the ropes. AA to the top rope, bradley kicks him off and gets the upper hand. bradley using a lot of strikes, until he throws AA out of the corner with a big hiptoss. AA avoids a big boot and starts attacking Bradleys legs. after some back and forth action with Bradley selling his left knee, AA hits a nice crucifix pin slam. Bradley into the corner, AA hits his running dropkick and brainbuster combination for the 3 count. AA really showed his strength with the brainbuster, as Bradley had a fair bit of height and weight over him.

Promo package of Sting and his loss at Slammiversairy, which then translates into his desire to recreate the Main Event Mafia. Surprisingly it shows highlights of the original MEM; Sting, Angle, Kevin Nash, Scott Steiner and Booker T, 3 of which I very much doubt will ever be involved with TNA ever again. Cameras show Sting talking to a mystery person, who’s hidden behind some equipment. Sting says he needs to know hes 100% behind him, and extends his hand. The mystery man then gives sting a very soft looking handshake which made me cringe a bit, I hate soft handshakes in real life, and surely if you’re in an angle about getting revenge and being tough there should’ve been a bit more emotion to it. Maybe I’m overthinking a handshake, but I think attention to detail is important.

Backstage Chavo is talking to Hernandez about the BFG, trying to fire him up and get him ready for his next match.  I am not a fan of Chavo at all, he’s got no character whatsoever, the only way he gets over is imitating his uncle Eddie Guerrero.

Hernandez comes to the ring, says there’s someone in the company that always pisses him off, and calls out Daniels.

HERNANDEZ v CHRISTOPHER DANIELS

Daniels starts the match by attacking Hernandez’s legs, doing the standard big vs small strategy. Hernandez with a big overhead belly to belly, and a gorilla press drop. After Daniels trys to make a comeback on the outside, he gets knocked back into the ring whilst Hernandez heads up the ramp, turns around, sprints back and connects with his running shoulder block over the top rope. Hernandez stays on course and grabs Daniels around the waist from behind, Daniels distracts Earl Hebner so he can low blow Hernandez, hits the BME (best moonsault ever) and picks up the win and the BFG points.

Back from the break, Kazarian in the ring, on the mic. He immediately calls the crowd ‘turd-burglars’ and says Bad Influence are going to dominate the Series. He says the man he’s calling out has been called ‘the next big breakout star, and he’s gorgeous, giggle, he he by Dixie Carter’, Magnus. I cannot say enough good things about Kaz and Daniels, they stand out amongst the rest of TNA by just making that little bit more of an effort to say ridiculous things.

KAZARIAN v MAGNUS

Magnus walks to the ring and goes straight for Kaz (which everyone who’s been called out has done) until they brawl to the outside and Kaz gets the upper hand. Magnus gets rolled back in, hit with some kicks and an elbow drop. Rear chinlock by Kaz, Magnus fights out and pushes him to the ropes, but cannot get any offence in. Kaz with a swinging neckbreaker and a DRAGON SLEEPER, which I haven’t seen anyone use for years. Magnus with a clothesline, Kaz tries a springboard crossbody but gets caught and slammed with a vertical suplex. Magnus then goes for a texas cloverleaf and gets the submission win! (submissions get you more points in the BFG series, technically everyone should be trying to win with them).

Backstage Hulk is on the phone, with Bully Ray sneaking around behind him, carrying a hammer. Hulk turns and catches him and says they’re going to ‘do this thing tonight’. Bully says he just wants to talk to Brooke. Hulk tells him that the two of them are done, to which Bully asks why Brooke stopped Hulk hitting him last week, calls him Dad and leaves. Bully Ray is great as the top heel of this company, he can do the brash loudmouth, but can also be quiet, almost creepy.

Brooke makes her way to the ring, with an announcement to make. She says how proud she is of the knockout division and asks them to come to the ring. Eric Young is at the front of them with ODB, because they’re the Knockout Tag Champs, which everyone had forgotten. In the ring theres only EY, ODB, Velvey Sky, Taryn Tarrell, Gail Kim and eventually Mickie James. I’m sure there were a lot more knockouts a while back, where’s Tessmacher? Brooke asks EY if he remembers the discussion they had just over a year ago, to which EY says ‘okay, we’re all humans, we make mistakes, and if you want to be technical, get down to brass tacks, carry the two over the common denominator, technically…I’m not a woman’, Which I actually laughed out loud at. The crowd starts chanting ‘NO NO NO NO’ at EY who smiles and says ‘…that’s strange’ but eventually gives up the title belts. He then says its national kissing day and plants a kiss on ODB until they fall through the ropes and run up the ramp, pretty funny.

Brooke sets up Velvets title rematch, and tells Gail that she will be having a ladder match with Taryn. If their last match is anything to go by, that should be great. I actually think Brooke is good in her role, she’s pretty smooth on the mic, and can act pretty naturally. what does stand out to me is that she towers over the rest of the knockouts, I’m surprised Hulk hasn’t gotten her to wrestle yet.

After the break we’re shown Hulk taking Brooke to a car, to get her away from Bully and what could happen later tonight.

AJ Styles makes his way to the ring with his new, moody music and low lighting. He grabs the mic and tells us that hes not concerned with aces & 8’s, or TNA, he just wants to win the World Heavyweight Title for himself. He doesn’t want the fame or the glory, he just wants the money. He goes on to say that TNA is no place for a hero, and he’s sick and tired of doing the ‘right thing’. If this was supposed to be a heel turn, I don’t think it worked. As long as AJ wrestles as well as he does, he’ll always get cheered. Samoa Joe makes his way to the ring, and the match begins.

SAMOA JOE v AJ STYLES

The match begins with headlocks, back and forth strikes. An Interesting chain of moves with Joe trying to escape the side headlock, but AJ refusing to let go. AJ eventually gets the upper hand with a kick out of the corner, a clothesline and a back body drop. Joe comes back with some jabs, a whip and a kick that sends AJ to the outside.

During this Taz says that he’d know if Bully Ray was planning something because he’s on the Aces & 8’s email list, amazing. I have grown to really like Taz, especially in this heel character, it doesn’t sound as forced as he did before (Jerry Lawler/Michael Cole take note).

AJ ends up stood on the apron, Joe stood on the floor, kicks AJ’s legs out and he takes a hard face first bump on the edge of the ring, and we go to commercial. After the break Joe is striking a woozy looking AJ, until he hits the ropes and AJ hits his beautiful backflip dropkick. Joe rolls to the outside and is hit with a baseball slide. Christy Hemme then pipes up and tells us there’s 5 minutes left in the match, to an audible ‘eh?’ from the crowd (I didn’t know it had a time limit, apparently I wasn’t alone). Both men back in the ring, AJ goes for a vertical suplex but can’t manage it, so settles for a rolling neckbreaker like Curtis Axel has been using recently. AJ runs out of the corner and gets hit with a powerslam so fast, Randy Orton could only dream. Joe goes for an Armbar, which is very logical in this series, until AJ fights out and gets to the corner. Both men head to the top rope, Joe attempts a superplex but AJ reverses it into what looked like a crossbody, but looked very dangerous. Joe hits AJ with Jabs until AJ uses a move that looks like Kofi Kingstons SOS rolling pin, but it ended with him in the calf killer, very innovative. Joe starts to turn and manages to get AJ into the choke as we’re told that there’s 30 seconds remaining. They then brawl until the time runs out, and its a draw.

Backstage Segment – We see Bully on the phone, to whom sounds to be Brooke. From what Bully is saying, it seems Brooke is happy to come back and see him. He tells her to turn the car around and head back, and sends D-Von, Knox and DOC to head out on the bikes and make sure she gets back safe.

Backstage Segment – Hulk is telling X Division Champion Chris Sabin, Kenny King and Suicide whoever wins their title match next week can then swap the title for a World Title match at Destination X. I like Sabin, he has a great comeback story but I can’t see him as the World Champ, unless they plan on pushing him hard for the next few weeks. There wasn’t even an X Division match on the card tonight, or even a segment to keep Sabin in your head.

MAIN EVENT: BOBBY ROODE v JEFF HARDY

Roode attacks Jeff as he’s making his entrance, they make their way to the ring and work through a few of Hardy’s moves at a very fast pace until Roode finally takes him down and manages to get a Crossface.

I don’t think the commentary is drawing enough attention to the submissions, if they put over the fact you get more points with them, it would make the viewers feel that the match could end at any time instead of just after a finisher.

Roode gets the upper hand and starts technically striking his way around Hardy’s body to wear him down. After playing to the crowd, Roode gets hit with a back elbow out of the corner and drops conveniently for a second rope splash from Hardy and a two count. Hardy stays on him with a dropkick to a seated Roode, and attempts a twist of fate. He gets shot off to the ropes and hit with Roodes RR Spinebuster and a nearfall. I thought that was Roodes finisher, but Hardy kicked out pretty easily? Hardy with a twist of fate which was more like a stunner, then goes to the top for the Swanton Bomb. Roode moves away at the last second and tries the crossface again. Hardy reverses that into a pin, and when both men get to their feet delivers a full on twist of fate for the win.

I felt that the main event was waaay too short, and made Roode look pretty weak next to Hardy, he should’ve gotten more offence in to make the series look a bit more equal.

Bully Ray makes his way to the ring and states the Bound For Glory series is underway, and he doesn’t care because he will do anything it takes to keep his title. He tells us to look at what he’s done to Hulk and Sting, but then says he’s more of a lover than a fighter, and asks Brooke to join him. After a minute waiting for her, he asks again, but is answered by the Main Event Mafia music. Sting makes his way out, grabs a mic and speaks on the need for a family. The crowd start a Sting chant, until Bully screams ‘AW SHUT YOUR MOUTHS, WHAT ARE YOU DOING, CHANTING FOR THE MAN WHO LOST TO ME!’ which stops the chants and gets him booed instead, genius. There isn’t enough of that in wrestling, paying attention to the crowd and reacting quickly. Sting starts to take off his jacket and tie, Bully says at the snap of his fingers, the Aces will be out here and handle him. As he continues, Bully goes through with his threat and snaps his fingers. After a pause Sting laughs and points to the big screen, which shows Anderson, Garret Bischoff and Wes Brisco laid out in the back, Wes with a beer keg between his legs, that must’ve been painful. Bully tries to suckerpunch Sting, but Sting comes back until Bully tries to run away. He’s stopped at the top of the ramp by a suited Kurt Angle, who takes him down and get the Ankle lock until Bully is screaming and tapping out as Sting is shouting in his face as the show goes off the air.

Notes: I enjoyed the majority of the matches tonight, with exception to Anderson – Park. At first I liked the Park character, as it showed how Chris Park/Abyss can actually do something completely different to the character he’s been playing for the last 10 years, but I feel that its run its course. I think the gimmick would’ve worked better if in all his matches he’d come close to winning, but ultimately lose every time. After a couple of months of that, he could finally get a win, which would make it a big deal and please the crowd. Any match involving Kaz, Daniels, AJ, AA, Samoa Joe and Bobby Roode is going to be at least decent, which bode well for tonight’s impact. I find it hilarious that because they’re back in the Main Event Mafia, Sting and Angle now wear suits. They’re still the same people, doing the same stuff, but y’know, that’s wrestling logic for you. I must say I’m interested to see who else joins MEM, I hope its not a huge disappointment.

Thanks for reading!
